How IFTA Works in Connecticut

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) was established to simplify the reporting of fuel taxes for businesses that operate across state lines. Connecticut is a member of IFTA, so carriers based in Connecticut that operate qualified motor vehicles in more than one state must register for IFTA. To obtain an IFTA license, carriers must submit an application to the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS). The license is valid for the calendar year.

Connecticut IFTA Vehicle Requirements

n order to register for IFTA in Connecticut, a vehicle must meet the following requirements:

  • Have two axles and a gross or registered gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds.
  • Have three or more axles, no matter the gross vehicle weight.
  • Operate in combination with a total weight exceeding 26,000 pounds

CT IFTA Renewal and Decals

Connecticut IFTA licenses must be renewed annually. Carriers usually receive their renewal applications in mid-October. You can renew online through the myconneCT portal or send the form back by mail. Once renewed, new decals are issued and must be placed on the vehicle by January 1 of the new year. Temporary credentials may be issued during the renewal period while awaiting the official decals.

With IFTA.Online, renewing your IFTA in Connecticut is simple. Just select your state and choose “IFTA Renewal” as the service type, and our team will handle the entire process for you.

Quarterly Connecticut IFTA Filing Requirements

Connecticut IFTA license holders must file quarterly returns that show how many miles they drove and how much fuel they purchased in each IFTA jurisdiction. It's important to keep accurate records, such as:

  • Beginning and ending odometer readings
  • Total miles per jurisdiction
  • Fuel receipts with date, location and amount.

Returns can be submitted either online through myconneCT or by mail. To stay in compliance, a "zero" report must be filed even if no fuel was bought or no miles were driven.

What to Expect from an IFTA Audit in Connecticut

The Connecticut DRS conducts regular audits to ensure compliance with IFTA regulations. At least 3% of all IFTA accounts are audited annually. Carriers are notified in writing at least 30 days in advance.

During an audit, you must provide:

  • Detailed trip reports
  • Fuel purchase records
  • Mileage summaries by jurisdiction

Proper recordkeeping, especially maintaining logs for four years, is very important for successfully passing an audit. Failing to provide adequate documentation can lead to fines and tax bills.
