How IFTA Works in Georgia

Georgia is a participating jurisdiction in the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), which allows qualified motor carriers to submit a single quarterly fuel use tax return through their base jurisdiction. Under IFTA, you report the miles traveled and fuel purchased in all member jurisdictions, then settle net taxes due or credits owed. Georgia, as your base, collects and distributes funds to other states as needed.

Georgia IFTA Vehicle Requirements

To qualify, your vehicle must meet one of these criteria:

  • Two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered weight over 26,000 pounds
  • Three or more axles, regardless of weight
Be part of a combination where the combined weight exceeds 26,000 pounds

Some Vehicle Types are Exempt in Georgia

  • School buses
  • Federal, state, or local government vehicles
  • Transit buses
  • Recreational vehicles used solely for personal pleasure

Note: For each qualified vehicle, Georgia issues one set of two decals (one for each side of the cab) with your IFTA license. Georgia also allows a grace period in January and February to display your new license/decals, provided you continued using the previous year’s decals.
