How IFTA Works in Idaho
The state of Idaho participates in the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), which allows qualified motor carriers based in Idaho to submit a single quarterly fuel use tax return through Idaho as their base jurisdiction. Therefore, Idaho, as your base jurisdiction, collects your tax return and distributes funds to other states or provinces your vehicles travel through.
To get the IFTA license in Idaho, online applications must be submitted to the Idaho State Tax Commission. You can also mail Form IMC-2 with your payment receipt, or otherwise fax or email the form and pay over the phone. Note that there is a new Idaho IFTA license fee of $10, and each set of decals costs 60 cents.
Idaho IFTA Vehicle Requirements
Your vehicles must meet at least one of these attributes to be considered a “qualified motor vehicle”:
- Have two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered GVW > 26,000 pounds
- Have three or more axles, regardless of weight
- Be used in a combination where the combined weight exceeds 26,000 pounds.
Vehicles that do not qualify for IFTA are recreational vehicles used solely for personal pleasure (motorhomes, pickup trucks with campers, buses used exclusively for personal use).
How to Renew IFTA License in Idaho
Renewals are an important part of maintaining full compliance with your Idaho IFTA license requirements. Licenses expire each year on December 31. Renewal can be completed online through the Idaho Tax Commission’s TAP system or via the renewal form mailed to you. To be eligible for renewal, you must have filed all prior quarterly returns. If you have outstanding returns or unpaid liabilities, your renewal will not be accepted.
Once you renew your IFTA Idaho credentials, you have a short window (typically January and February) to distribute the new decals and license copies to your fleet vehicles, continuing to use the prior‑year decals during that time.
With IFTA.Online, renewing your IFTA in Idaho is simple. Just select your state and choose “IFTA Renewal” as the service type, and our team will handle the entire process for you.
The Deadlines for Filing Quarterly Idaho IFTA Return
| Quarter | Period Covered | Return Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | January to March | April 30 |
| Q2 | April to June | July 31 |
| Q3 | July to September | October 31 |
| Q4 | October to December | January 31 |
Even if your vehicles operated no miles or purchased no fuel during a quarter, you are still required to file a “zero” report.
What to Expect from an IFTA Audit in Idaho
Idaho conducts audits on IFTA licensees to check compliance. These audits are part of a program where base jurisdictions are required to audit at least 3% of the IFTA accounts within their state annually. An audit may include:
- Fuel purchase receipts
- Mileage logs / trip records showing distance traveled
- Vehicle operational records, registration documents, decals and cab‑cards
- Bulk fuel storage records (if applicable)
Failure to maintain accurate records may result in revocation of your Idaho IFTA license, penalties and the requirement to purchase temporary fuel tax permits.
