How IFTA Works in Illinois

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) simplifies fuel tax reporting for carriers who travel between Illinois and other states. Instead of filing separate tax returns with each jurisdiction, IFTA allows Illinois truckers to file a single quarterly IFTA return for all states and provinces where they have traveled. The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) processes the return, and taxes are distributed to the relevant jurisdictions based on mileage and fuel purchases.

Illinois IFTA Vehicle Requirements

In Illinois, your vehicle is eligible for IFTA registration if:

  • It has a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or
  • It has three or more axles, regardless of weight, or
  • It is used in combination with a trailer exceeding 26,001 pounds.

If your vehicle does not meet these requirements and stays within Illinois, you do not need IFTA registration. Vehicles that qualify for IFTA registration must display two decals issued by Illinois.
